Waste-Free Lunch at Edna Staebler
clip_image002.gifEdna Staebler is proud to have been a certified Gold Eco School since the year we opened.  Part of our Eco Schools plan is to reduce the amount of waste in our school.  A large amount of waste is created in pre-packaged lunch foods, which is why we are thankful to have our school community’s support in implementing a Waste-Free lunch.

We ask for all of the waste in students’ lunches to be packed back in their lunch bags and brought home.  We also encourage families to make Earth-friendly choices as often as possible by packing lunch foods in reusable containers, including reusable water bottles, rather than pre-packaged foods in one-use containers, such as lunchables and drinking boxes.

When students bring food in reusable containers, it is not only much better for the Earth, but it is also much easier for them to re-seal the containers in order to save food or drink for the second nutrition break, or to bring it home with them if they have not finished eating.  If students bring food in one-use packaging, it cannot be disposed of at school and must be brought home for recycling and waste disposal.

We are thankful to now have Green Bins in our school for composting.  Students are encouraged to dispose of inedible food waste, such as apple cores, banana and orange peels, in the Green Bins.  Children are asked to continue to bring leftovers home so that parents can monitor what their children are eating, and in order to avoid unnecessary food waste.

Please take some time to discuss these procedures with your children to help them understand the importance of making these practices a habit.  If you wish to learn more about Eco Schools, please check out their website at:  http://www.ontarioecoschools.org/

Thank you for your continued interest and support in our school initiatives.  Your children are helping to make the world a better place.
